To search for hemlock woolly adelgid, gently turn over a hemlock branch
and take a close look at the needles. If the tree is infested, there will
be white woolly masses on the stem at the base of the needle. The image
to the right shows the underside of an infested branch. Having an exact
location is very helpful, so please note your location with a photograph,
map or GPS unit if available.
There are many things in the forest that produce similar white masses,
so having the insect confirmed by a professional is crucial.
