The eastern hemlock tree is the iconic evergreen found along streams and lower slopes in eastern Kentucky. They form unique forests that have been in place for thousands of years but are now being threatened by hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), a tiny insect from Asia that feeds on the tree's needles. HWA was accidentally introduced into the forests of eastern North America in the 1950s and has spread to eighteen states including Kentucky. Fortunately there are several treatment options ranging from chemical treatments to predatory insects to insecticides. The most cost effective treatment is a chemical soil injection which is especially effective in the early stages of infestation, so time is a critical factor in our project. If left untreated, hemlock trees experience premature needle drop and eventual tree death within 2-7 years. The loss of the eastern hemlock from Kentucky's forest would be profound and irreversible. Save Kentucky's Hemlocks is working to raise the awareness and resources needed to protect our natural areas from hemlock woolly adelgid. We invite you to explore our site to learn more and hope you will consider getting involved. |
